Travelling back to Assam and Meghalaya after eight years, this time with a group of friends from Kochi, was for us at once a homecoming and a rediscovery. Curated and executed efficiently by the team at ChaloHoppo, we had a varied and packed 11-day itinerary of personalized, off-beat, immersive travel experiences. We trekked to waterfalls, manoeuvred over root bridges, walked reverentially through sacred groves, explored ancient caves filled with fossils, waded through crystal clear lakes, and safari-ed in Kaziranga where wild elephants, hog and swamp deer, and the magnificent one-horned rhino made their appearance. The food was great everywhere, roadside dhabas, local restaurants, and village homes, and our stays ranged from heritage cottages to a superbly appointed tea garden bungalow where bird calls filled the lush gardens. It’s impossible to say which experience was most memorable: a sunset cruise on the Brahmaputra, the heart-stopping beauty of Lake Umiam, the unembarrassed beauty of wild ferns and orchids, or the sweet fizz of chilled rice beer on a cloudless day. This was a special trip, woven with landscapes and memories that are part of who we have become.
