What is ChaloHoppo?
During the first week of April, there is an air of celebration and merry in the district of Mon, Nagaland. The Aoleang festival is underway and people come together to celebrate the new sowing season. It marks the end of the year and beginning of the new with the arrival of spring.
Why does ChaloHoppo exist?
The Aoleang festival is the most important festival of the Konyak tribe, one of the largest recognised tribes. During the festival, communities across villages all over Nagaland come together to welcome the new year as well as to pray for a good harvest season. The festival also aims to preserve and promote cultural heritage as people display their talents in the forms of indigenous dances and songs.

Each day in the week of the festival has its own purpose and significance; of these the most important is the fourth day, “Lingnyu Nyih”. It is the day when members of the Konyak tribe dress up in their best traditional clothes and jewellery. Special ritual dances and songs are performed that symbolise the tribe’s history of headhunting. The day of Lingnyu Nyih is spent celebrating and eating with family and friends.

Depending on where you want to go, for a baseline we recommend packing some clothes that are water resistant, some warm clothes for the colder areas and some sturdy shoes.
