The Ahom Kingdom History

Known in ancient lore as the kingdom of Pragjyotisha and Kamrupa, it is only in comparatively recent terms (1228 CE), after the conquest and reign of the region by the Ahoms, a Buddhist Tai community, that the identity of the land changed forever, giving it the name “Assam”. The Ahom Kingdom of Assam proved to be the longest surviving dynasty in the history of India, where they ruled the land for nearly 600 years, in which period, even the mighty Mughals could not get past them.

Fast forward to today, the state of Assam, geographically, is a shadow of it’s former self. At one point of time, not too long ago, most of what we know today as the North East of India (including Arunachal Pradesh, Nagaland, Meghalaya, Mizoram), and much more (parts of Myanmar and the Bangladesh), was all a part of the diverse and grand state of Assam.

Assam: The Gateway to the North East of India

Still, as of date, Assam proves to be a vibrant gateway to all of the 7 sisters of North east India. Home to the world’s best tea, the mighty Brahmaputra, and the famed One-horned Rhinoceros, endemic to the state, there is an incredible lot that the Assam has to offer. More than being just a gateway, It is blessed with a diverse mix of people, flora, fauna and terrains.
