Note: The transparency of the Umngot River is dependent on external factors.
Meghalaya is a land shaped by water – by streams that run clear as glass, waterfalls that emerge from forested cliffs, and living root bridges grown patiently over time. Through October to December, the region shifts into a quieter, more defined rhythm. The skies turn crisp, the air cools, and the waters settle into their clearest, most transparent form.
This journey through the Khasi and Jaintia Hills is designed to move beyond the obvious, blending well-known landscapes with experiences that feel immersive and unhurried. From exploring the dramatic terrain of Sohra to spending time by the rivers of Shnongpdeng, the route balances movement with moments of pause. Natural pools, forest trails, caves, and rivers become recurring elements – each offering a different way to experience the land.
Winter brings a certain clarity to Meghalaya. Trails are easier to walk, viewpoints open up with long-range visibility, and the overall pace of travel feels more relaxed. Activities like bamboo rafting, riverside exploration, and short hikes become more enjoyable in the cooler weather, allowing you to engage more deeply with the surroundings.
Along the way, culture reveals itself naturally – in local interactions, shared meals, and quiet village life. Evenings are simple and slow, often spent by the river, under open skies, or reflecting on the day’s experiences.
This is not a journey built around rushing from one attraction to another. It is about experiencing Meghalaya in its truest form – through water, landscapes, and moments that unfold gradually, leaving a lasting impression.
The trip begins at Guwahati Airport on Day 1 and concludes at Guwahati Airport on Day 7. All airport transfers during the scheduled start and end of the trip are planned accordingly.
On Day 1, participants are required to arrive at Guwahati Airport by 12:00 PM at the latest. The group will depart from the airport by 1:00 PM. Any arrivals beyond this time – due to flight timings or delays – will need to reach Shillong at their own expense.
If your flight timings do not align, we recommend arriving a day prior.
For departure, return flights can be booked after 4:30 PM on Day 7, as we aim to reach the airport by around noon depending on the traffic.
If you arrive a day earlier, pick-up can be arranged from Guwahati Airport, Jalukbari Junction, or Khanapara, depending on your stay location. These are designated points en route to Shillong. The vehicle will not enter the city beyond these locations.
We’ll be staying at a mix of homestays, guesthouses, and campsites throughout the journey.
None of the properties is boutique or luxury-focused. However, all stays are clean, comfortable, hygienic, and have been carefully selected by our team to suit the experience.
Rooms are on a double-sharing basis. Solo travellers will be paired with another solo traveller of the same gender. Most properties offer double-bedded rooms. Room allocation is managed by the team based on gender and confirmed bookings.
Meals during the trip are simple, home-style, and reflective of local Khasi cuisine.
Vegetarian options are available – please inform us in advance.
In Shillong, you’ll also have the option to explore cafés and local eateries on your own.
Most major expenses are already covered. An additional ₹800–₹1,000 per day should be sufficient for personal expenses, snacks, cafés, and small purchases. UPI works in most places, but we recommend carrying some cash for remote areas.
From Day 2 onwards, activities are led by local expert guides, along with a ChaloHoppo Trip Lead accompanying the group throughout the journey.
Mobile connectivity is available in most towns and key areas. Airtel and Jio generally offer the best coverage. However, in remote locations, forest areas, or during activities, the network may be weak or intermittent. Wi-Fi is available at some stays, but speeds may be limited.
From October to December, Meghalaya transitions into a cooler, clearer phase after the monsoon. Days are generally pleasant with good visibility, while mornings and evenings can feel noticeably chilly, especially in Shillong, Sohra, and riverside areas like Shnongpdeng.
Winter is one of the best times to experience:
However, the water can feel cold, particularly in the mornings, and participation is based on individual comfort.
While this is largely a dry and stable season, occasional light showers or morning fog may occur. All activities are planned keeping conditions in mind and will continue as scheduled unless safety concerns arise. In such cases, the trip leader may make on-ground adjustments to ensure a safe and smooth experience.
This experience is designed to go beyond just sightseeing. Instead of covering only popular spots, the journey focuses on:
It’s less about ticking locations and more about experiencing the landscape, water, and culture at a natural pace.
We recommend carrying a medium-sized backpack (40 – 60L) and a small daypack. A detailed Things to Carry list will be shared once you sign up.
The water will be cold, especially during winter mornings. However, under the sun, it can feel refreshing. You do not need to know how to swim. All water activities are conducted with Life jackets, Local supervision and guidance.
Participation is optional – you can always choose to relax by the riverside instead.
This trip is suitable for travellers with a basic active lifestyle. The hikes are non-technical, but you should be comfortable walking for a few hours and staying active through the day.
This trip may not be ideal for those with serious knee issues or a completely inactive lifestyle.
Meghalaya has some of the better-maintained hill roads in the country. Most drives range between 3-5 hours. Certain stretches, especially between Sohra and Pongtung, may be slightly bumpy.
