Details

With countless waterfalls, over 1,700 caves, and nearly 100 known living root bridges, Meghalaya continues to captivate as one of nature’s finest creations. Often described as a natural amusement park, it combines unmatched beauty with a culture that feels like a warm embrace.

While Meghalaya enchants year-round, the winter months from November to February open up a particularly magical chapter—one where the skies are clear, the air is crisp, and the landscape glows in a golden, quieter light. It’s a time when the land breathes slower, offering a unique intimacy with its hidden wonders.

As the monsoon retreats and winter settles in, Meghalaya reveals a drier, more accessible side of itself. Rivers and pools shimmer in the soft winter sun, creating perfect conditions for exploring experiences that are otherwise elusive during the rains. Think of descending into caves like Krem Chympe, where underground rivers snake past ancient rock formations, or wandering along jungle trails that lead to secret root bridges and fossils from forgotten eras.

This chapter takes you deep into the magical Khasi Hills and touches the mysterious Jaintia Hills, curating experiences that are as soulful as they are scenic. Picture yourself dipping into crystal-clear natural pools, standing before cascading waterfalls in full flow, or hiking trails where the forest seems untouched by time. Evenings are for stargazing, bonfires, and stays that wrap you in both comfort and wilderness.

November to February offers a unique invitation to see Meghalaya in a different light—where everything feels open, unhurried, and deeply immersive. Whether it’s venturing into ancient caves, discovering lesser-known trails, or simply watching the winter skies stretch endlessly above, this journey through Meghalaya’s quiet marvels will stay with you long after it ends.

FAQs

What are the pick-up points in Guwahati if I arrive before the trip starts?

If you are landing a day prior to the trip, you can join the group either at Guwahati Airport, Jalukbari Junction, or near Khanapara — depending on where you are staying in Guwahati. These are the designated pick-up points en route to Khleihriat, as the vehicle will not stop or enter the city beyond these points.

This trip is designed to ensure a smooth journey for everyone. The group (guests + team) will depart from Guwahati Airport strictly by 12:00 PM (Noon).

To avoid any inconvenience, please make sure to book your flights accordingly. If your flight arrives later than the scheduled departure time, you will need to travel to Jowai independently, where we will arrange to pick you up. For ease of travel, we recommend arriving in Guwahati a day earlier, if necessary.

Breakfast will be served at the properties that we are staying at. Most of these places provide simple breakfast that ranges from Poori + Vegetables to Sandwiches, Bread, Butter, and Omelettes.

The lunches and dinners that are included are usually simple home cooked Khasi meals (Rice, Dal, Vegetables, Meat, Pickles) that are apt while hiking or engaging in water activities.

Other meals can be ordered at the place of stay or nearby restaurants. You have options of all cuisines in Shillong.

Your primary day of water activities shall be at Amkoi and Krem Chympe.

While no doubt the waters will be cold, a swim when the sun is harsh above you during the day is not the worst idea.

For the best experience, we would recommend full body wet suits during this season.

It is important to note that booking flights before reserving a slot with us does not guarantee availability. In the event that we are sold out, we cannot be held responsible for any inconvenience caused.

The roads in Meghalaya are some of the best hill roads in the country with beautiful views. Chances of motion sickness are much lesser than usual mountain roads as the number of windy roads are much lesser.

Rooms are shared on twin sharing basis. In case you are a solo traveller, you will be paired up with another solo traveller of the same gender.

While most of your expenses are taken care of, an additional Rs. 1,000 per day (upper limit) would be more than enough for all your expenses. Activities at Shnongpdeng range from Rs. 250 to Rs. 700 per activity. You can take a look at our Exclusions to get a better understanding of how much money you may need.

If you have a few more days to go around the Northeast, we would recommend Kaziranga, Majuli, Nagaland or parts of Arunachal Pradesh depending on the number of additional days you have in hand:

2 to 3 days – Kaziranga

3 to 5 days – Kaziranga and Majuli / Dzukou Valley in Nagaland

5 to 7 days – Full trip to Nagaland

8 to 10 days – Full trip to Arunachal Pradesh

Once you sign up for the trip, we will be sending you a detailed list of Things to Carry for the season!

Yes, each day’s activities will be accompanied by a knowledgeable local guide who will provide insights into the culture, history, and natural wonders of the region. You will also have a ChaloHoppo trip leader throughout the trip.
